As consumer-facing robots become more plausible, the business case for such a model is obvious. But what physical spaces are “world” models actually being trained on? The contemporary physical environment, sound-proofed, plastic-coated, and artificially-colored, is radically different from the environment that Homo sapiens evolved to excel in.

2025年末的一天，我在旧书网站上浏览，注意到一本英文小说《女人不败》（The Impregnable Women），作者是艾瑞克·林克莱特（Eric Linklater，1899-1974）。我记得这个书名，因为平时总翻看《钱锺书手稿集·外文笔记》索引那一卷，知道钱先生喜欢读林克莱特写的书，其中就有这本《女人不败》。网站上展示了该书的版权页和书名页，系伦敦的乔纳森·凯普（Jonathan Cape）出版社1938年8月第三次印刷本（该书1938年6月出版，到8月就第三次印刷，可见颇受欢迎）。书名页空白处偏左，原有竖写的书主题识，可惜被人刮去了，只留下隐约的笔画。我心下一动：莫非……遂订下此书。
